The magical motivation that comes from working out with kind and talented athletes .

From my point of view as a fibromyalgia patient, I want to share how I recover my mind AND BODY after having trained for a number of months for the Louisville Full Ironman. Many people ask me what distance is performed in a competition of that size, it involves swimming 2.4 miles (3.86 kms.), to cycle for 112 miles (180.25 kms.) and to run 26 miles (42.1 kms.) for a total of 140.6 miles (226 kms.) with a time limit of 17:00 hours exactly.

The preparation requires over 16 to 20 hours of training per week (see previous articles).

THE 2014 LOUISVILLE IRONMAN took place last August 24, 2014. The conditions of this race are different for a person living in Miami because of the difference in the landscape.

SWIMMING is performed in the Ohio River, where the departure of the swimmers depends on the time of arrival, the water is murky without visibility therefore you must be prepared to sustain some blows from the swimmers. The first swimming segment goes through a small channel against the current for approximately 1,200 meters bordering a small island to later swim back with the current to the transition area which was a lot of fun. We crossed the Interstate Road I-65 bridge providing an interesting touch of the view of the bridge from another angle.

THE CYCLING STRETCH is flat in the first and last sections of the run but you can say that 80% of it has elevations which for a Miami competitor can be a challenge. The highest elevation is approximately 12 to 14% (Key Biscayne Causeway has 5% elevation) and the total is 5.433 ft. The route KY-1694 segment is probably the most complicated part because of narrow and broken state of the road. However, the Ohio River view, the horse farms and the green of the hills is beautiful. The smells of nature imbued the road with the coolness of that morning as a prelude to the high temperatures that would occur that afternoon during the marathon.

AT THE MARATHON I succeeded in running the 1,703 meters elevation at a temperature which felt like 98 degrees Fahrenheit and 59% humidity, I did not stop until the end, feeling tired, but very well mentally and physically.

IN GENERAL, I enjoyed the race, I conquered my fear of swimming in the river against the current, without wearing a neoprene suit, I conquered my fear of using a triathlon bike on mountains and to run without stopping to the finish line. I am very proud of having accomplished same and very thankful to Laura Jimenez for having accompanied  me during long hours of training, also with my daughter who saw after my healthy nutrition during the prior months and also  my dear mother who visited me during the weeks prior to the race, providing me with great of emotional support.

THE VOLUNTEERS
did not spare any courtesies in order tocooperate, they were really very helpful and affectionate. The idea of providing us with chicken consume in addition to Gatorade, ice, water, fruit, pretzels, etc., was, in my opinion, excellent.

It was an excellent, well organized race. I would do it again.

THE RECOVERY varies between competitors but in my personalcase it has to do with metal and physical relaxation for at least two weeks.

So I’m going to allow the pictures to speak for themselves.
