The benefits of yoga are many including stress relief, lower blood pressure, slower heart rate, breath control, better posture, strength, and flexibility in body and mind. Practiced for thousands of years, yoga was designed to be a moving meditation and the Asana- the physical postures of yoga – were meant to make the body strong and flexible enough to sit still in meditation for extended periods of time. Perhaps Patanjali said it best in his Yoga Sutras: “Yoga is the restraint of the modifications of the mind.” Our minds are constantly moving and jumping from topic to topic. Yoga is designed to assist with single-pointed focus and becoming conscious of the present moment, aside from the physical benefits it offers.
As a triathlete and a fibromyalgia patient, the practice of yoga has been of great benefit to train my mind to focus, an apply that on a daily basis and to the sports I regularly practice. For example when I swim in open waters I use breathing meditations from yoga to create awareness of the surroundings but keeping zero thoughts. I just feel the sensations around me interacting with nature, caressing the sky, the ocean, lake or river to feel one with the universe.
